DOT Region 2, DOST, and FNRI Launch First-Ever Training for Food Safety Inspectors in Cagayan
The Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 2, in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), has launched the first-ever Training for Food Safety Inspectors on the use of DOST-FNRI’s Food Safety Grading System Tools on April 2, 2025. This pioneering initiative seeks to standardize and enhance food safety and cleanliness across food establishments in the region, reinforcing the government’s commitment to public health and quality assurance in the food industry.

The training, held at Go Hotels Plus, Tuguegarao City, is also part of the celebration of this year’s Filipino Food Month, highlighting the importance of food safety in preserving and promoting Filipino cuisine.
DOST Regional Director Virginia Bilgera officially opened the training, setting the stage for a comprehensive learning experience. FNRI Officer-In-Charge Atty. Lucieden Raz and DOT Regional Director Troy Alexander Miano also delivered inspirational messages, emphasizing the critical role of food safety in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

Science Research Specialist Claire Gacias presented the Food Inspection Checklist (FIC) and Code of Standards to provide participants with a clear framework for evaluating food establishments. Senior Science Research Specialist May Ann Gironella discussed the Operations Manual and the Conduct of Risk-Based Inspections, outlining essential protocols for food safety evaluation. Senior Science Research Specialist I Eirene Agustin Arnejo then conducted a demonstration on risk-based inspection using the FIC, offering participants hands-on insights into effective food safety assessment.
The training is attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from Provincial and City Local Government Units (LGUs), the academe, and line agencies such as DOST and the Department of Agriculture (DA).
On the second day, participants will conduct a mock inspection at selected food establishments, allowing them to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting.
This initiative underscores the commitment of the DOT, DOST, and FNRI in ensuring food safety compliance and strengthening consumer confidence in the region’s food industry.#
