DOT Region 2 conducts Local Validation Trip for the Amazing Sta. Ana Tourism Circuit

The Department of Tourism, Region 2 conducted a local validation trip for the “Amazing Sta. Ana” Tourism Circuit last August 9-11, 2021.

The purpose of the local validation trip was to assess the readiness of the activities identified in the “Amazing Sta. Ana” Tourism Circuit in preparation for the re-opening of tourism in the region. The DOT-Region 2 also validated the viability of the new tourism circuit created for Sta. Ana in consideration of the New Normal scenario.

Sta. Ana, Cagayan is being prepared as a stand-alone destination by the Local Government Unit, together with the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority and Free Port (CEZAFP). Initial meetings were done in preparation for the re-opening of tourism through dialogues (face to face and online) with Fisherfolks and community organizations.  This new tourism circuit caters to nature, eco-tourism, sun and beach and adventure enthusiasts.

Among the destinations and activities validated by the team include belt fishing activity where Fisherfolks used “kariti”, a traditional way of catching the belt fish. Also part of the itinerary was the Buwacag Falls, a nature tourism destination which is managed by Buwacag Eco-Tourism Association (BETA). The team also validated an enchanting experience through firefly watching which dwells in “kulabban” trees abundant in Brgy. Casagan in Sta. Ana. The famous Palaui Island was also visited by the team. This is home to the Cape Engano Lighthouse which constructed in 1888 and is the only existing lighthouse in the northeastern coast. It has been declared a National Cultural Treasure.

It was noted during the validation trip that there is a need for the Local Government Unit of Sta. Ana to finalize their Local Tourism Development Plan (LTDP) which will provide the direction for development of tourism for the stakeholders, decision makers and potential investors.

The LGU of Sta. Ana identified tourism as one of its top priority industries through its collaboration and cooperation with the National Government Agencies, private stakeholders and the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority and Free Port (CEZAFP). Tourism in the area is undeniably supporting the community through the many potentials and activities it offers. Prior to the pandemic, Sta. Ana has a booming tourism industry and many projects related to tourism has been proposed to usher in job creation and tourism development.
