DOT Observes World Tourism Day 2018

The Department of Tourism, Cagayan Valley Region started the celebration of th

e Tourism Weekwith a Eucharistic celebration lastSeptember 21, 2018. Industry partners, other line agencies and members of non-government organizations were present during the said mass.

 

In observance of the World Tourism Day (WTD) 2018 with the theme, “Tourism and the Digital Transformation”, the Department conducted the Regional Tourism Quiz onSeptember 26, which was the highlightof the WTD 2018. It was hosted by the City of Tuguegarao and was participated by the selected secondary and tertiary students from the provinces of Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino and the cities of Cauayan, Santiago, Ilagan and Tuguegarao.

Mr. Evarish Carmona of Isabela National High School bested other contestants taking home the first place with a cash prize of 7,000.00 while Mr. Lloyd Ryan Narag of Cagayan National High School and Ms. LykaDumaga of Quirino General High School won the 2nd and 3rd place with a cash prize of 5,000.00 and 3,000.00, respectively.

 

For the tertiary level, Nueva Vizcaya’spride, Mr. Ramon Bangngon of Nueva Vizcaya State University ranked 1st place with 10,000.00 cash prize while Cagayan’s representative, Mr.  Billy Jason Vuelta of Cagayan State University-Andrews Campus bagged 2nd place (7,000.00), followed by Ms. ChrisantaLidem of Quirino State University as the 3rd placer (5,000.00).

 

Aside from the cash prize, each winner received a token and certificate from the DOT. On the other hand, consolation prizes were also given to the other participants. The City Government of Tuguegarao gave additional cash prizes to the winners as well.

 

The composition of this year’s board of judges were PIA Regional Director PuritaLicas as Chairman of the Board; Dr. Cecilia Dy, co-chair of Regional Development Committee and Private Sector Representative for Tourism; and Dr. Sofia Taguibao, Education Supervisor of Commission on Higher Education.

 

This year’s celebration is a unique opportunity to raise awareness on tourism’s actual and potential contribution to sustainable development. It sees digital advances and innovation as part of the solution to the challenge of marrying continued growth with a more sustainable and responsible tourism sector.
