Batanes Recipient of the World Toilet Association Funding

On March 26, 2018 officials from the World Toilet Association (WTA) arrived in the Batanes to officially turn-over the newly built toilet with an Ivatan stone house design, a facility that can be used continuously and maintained by the community.

In attendance during the event were Manager Sungyeon Nikki Kim of WTA and No Hyun-Young of the Public Toilet Team, City of Suwon, Korea. They were welcomed by the officials of the province headed by Governor Marilou Cayco. Also in the said program was the Director of the Office Tourism Standards and Regulations of the Department of Tourism, Dir. Danilo Intong and representatives from the Department of Tourism, Regional Office 02.

The World Toilet Association is an international organization dedicated to protecting lives through the improvement of sanitation via toilets.

The main objective of the project is to provide access to those who suffer from lack of proper sanitation and toilets. The Public Toilet Building Campaign targets developing countries designated by UN in which the majority of the population lacks access to toilet facilities. Toilet facilities tailored to the climates, culture, traditions and level of income of the target districts, are built in public places such as tourist attractions, schools, and parks.

It will be recalled that the WTA team and the provincial government of Batanes signed an agreement on April 11, 2017 for the construction of the toilets.
